When performing a Fischer Esterification reaction, what gas is formed during the neutralization step?

Posted by admin on May 11th, 2010 and filed under performing | 1 Comment »

When performing a fischer esterification, what gas is formed during the neutralization step? The reaction has p-aminobenzoic acid in a methanol solution and the addition of H2SO4 to result in Ethyl p-aminobenzoate and water as product. Thanks for any help!

If you neutralized with either Na2CO3 or NaHCO3 then the gas would be CO2

Thanks to all Susans Fans for making this video so successful xx

Here are the Lyrics(Thanks to NewHotdox) -

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
    When hope was high,
    And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving.

Then I was young and unafraid
When dreams were made and used,
    And wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
    No song unsung,
    No wine untasted.

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hopes apart
As they turn your dreams to shame.

And still I dream he’ll come to me
And we will live our lives together
But there are dreams that cannot be
    And there are storms
    We cannot weather…

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this I’m living
So different now from what it seems
    Now life has killed
    The dream I dreamed.

In performing street magic, what is the best way to open a conversation and starting a performance?

Posted by admin on May 8th, 2010 and filed under performing | 4 Comments »

I really want to do some street magic to some bystanders, customers in a restaurant and etc. But i could not seem to find the right words to open or engage in a conversation leading to me performing magic.

Good topic on some lines here:

    http://www.magichat.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=12131

Basically, if you’ve seen Blaine and similar people performing on the street your first thought might be the whole "Would you like to see something?" approach. Or perhaps "Would you like to see some magic?"
When you think about it though, I mean REALLY think about that from the other perspective, I mean sure, it gets the point across, but does it sound that great? Not really. It’s just not something I would recommend using.

Imagine someone walking up with a deck of cards in their hands asking if you want to see something. Not an interesting approach.

Really, I would usually start by introducing myself, walk up shake their hand etc. "Hey, my name is ____ ____, I’m a local/close-up/whatever performing magician, could I have a minute of your time? Perhaps show you a few things I’ve been working on?" (by the way, telling someone you are still "working on this" when doing an effect catches them more off guard as it seems like your just practicing even though you’ve practiced it so many times before and have it down)

Find something to fit your personality, but most of all, make sure you HAVE a personality. Be friendly, be mysterious, be whoever you want to be but make sure to be someone and to have some kind of feeling in your voice. Blaine may get reactions, but the performance…is not one. Don’t go with that monotone same sounding almost bored voice. It doesn’t sounds very exciting or intriguing. You want them to WANT to see what you have to show.

Just like all of your different effects, you want to make the approaching lines or patter your own. Walk up, or if standing next to them already…go ahead and get their attention either by starting to talk to them or pulling out your cards etc. Sometimes I may just walk up, shake their hand (firm grip, but not too tight, just to show confidence), introduce myself, produce my deck (from a palm) and go into whatever patter "I’m doing an experiment for school on probability and people’s ability to pay attention to certain actions."

Be confident, create your own lines, make it your own and make it to fit your character…

When performing a monologue in an audition where do you look?

Posted by admin on May 7th, 2010 and filed under performing | 9 Comments »

During an audition, when performing a monologue/ audition piece, where do you look. This confuses me, because I’ve heard that you should never look at your auditioners, but then where do you look when in the audition piece you’re adressing someone or the audience?

Most people look at the casting director. However, if there is a video camera, don’t look directly into it. I mean ideally if you stare down the directors that would be awkward. If your monologue requires you to look at someone then you should, but if you want to add, emotion and stuff maybe look away.
